ECOLOGICAL IMAGINARIES, CRITICAL REFLECTIONS
SU Gender International Conference
As humans, we are continually examining how to position ourselves spatially, aesthetically, emotionally, intellectually, and practically in our environments. Today, we face these tasks with new urgency as the devastating impact of pandemics and epidemics, ecological degradation and global climate change stimulates renewed scholarly focus on the human and planet relationship. From Ecocriticism to Posthumanism to Deep Ecology studies, the humanities and social sciences are engaged in a multi-disciplinary effort to understand how humans interact with natural and built environments. SU Gender international conference on February 23-25, 2023 aims to engage with and foster discussions around the complex and historically situated ways in which we imagine and inhabit the environment as well as remember and tell stories to each other from the perspectives of feminist political ecology.
Our conference seeks to collaboratively investigate social, cultural, literary, and artistic initiatives into what we tentatively call “ecological imaginaries''. Our critical question is two-fold: what makes, or could make, ecological imaginaries socio-culturally impactful in the given context? and how shall we, as cultural and literary scholars, artists, and other practitioners, creatively and constructively work with such imaginaries to provoke new approaches to the ecological crisis?
