The Sustainability Minor Program, which is planned to be declared in the Spring Term of 2025 at our university, aims to contribute to the development of our students by providing a human and nature-friendly perspective.
It is important for our graduates to internalize the most up-to-date approaches to sustainability when they enter working life, because these are among the key elements of making a difference in today's science, business, and management world. At a time when the world's leading universities are adding sustainability to their curricula, this program, prepared with the contributions of our three faculties, will address environmental, economic, and social sustainability from an interdisciplinary perspective.
The first of the Sustainability Events to be organized for the introduction of the program will feature a talk centered on the themes of sustainability and biodiversity on Monday, December 2nd at 13:30. The Water Buffalo Commons Project, carried out in collaboration with CLIMAVORE x Jameel at the Royal College of Arts and the Culinary Arts Academy(MSA), will be the focus of the talk. The project aims to protect the wetlands in the northwest of Istanbul, which have been home and habitat for Istanbul's water buffalos for centuries, and to make pastoralist practices sustainable.
The talk will be held with the participation of Alon Schwabe from the Buffalo Welfare Project, Ayşe Özil from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Levent Öztürk from the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, and Öykü Arkan from Sabancı Business School. The talk will be moderated by Zafer Yenal from Sabancı Business School. During the event, special puddings prepared with buffalo milk by the chefs of the Culinary Arts Academy (MSA) will be tasted.
We invite all our students, faculty members, and employees to FASS 1010 to come together for this delicious event and get inspired for a sustainable future!
Brief Information about the Water Buffalo Commons Project
CLIMAVORE x Jameel at RCA Water Buffalo Commons Project aims to protect wetlands in the northwest of Istanbul, sustain pastoralist practices, and ensure long-term economic sustainability through buffalo products. This project aims to create a consumer line for the development of local buffalo milk products, while also protecting the cultural, gastronomic, and ecological heritage of the region. In this context, Çamuralem Muhallebicisi, which was established in 2022 and was also featured in the 17th Istanbul Biennial (2023), continues its activities as one of the first concrete steps of the project. The long-term goals of the project include creating a sustainable business model together with buffalo breeders and the Çamuralem team in addition to ensuring the development of higher-value buffalo milk products. MSA contributes to the project by working on innovative dairy products made with buffalo milk through research and development-oriented workshops and new courses designed by the company.
