ISPF Support for Our Researcher Morteza Ghorbani

The project entitled “AquaCav: Clean Water Using the Power of Cavitation Bubbles”, of which FENS and EFSUN researcher Dr. Morteza Ghorbani is the principal investigator, is funded by the British Council under the International Science Partnership Fund (ISPF) Research Collaboration Grant Scheme.

Morteza Ghorbani

Dr. Morteza Ghorbani is the principal investigator, and Prof. Dr. Iakovos Tzanakis is the co-principal investigator of the project, which will be carried out in collaboration with Oxford Brookes University. FENS Faculty Member and EFSUN Researcher Prof. Dr. Ali Koşar is also a researcher in this project.

Project Summary:

In an era marked by global environmental challenges, AquaCav stands as an ambitious collaborative initiative between Oxford Brookes University (OBU), UK and Sabanci University (SU), Turkey combining the power of acoustic and hydrodynamic cavitation to revolutionize wastewater treatment in both countries. Focused on reducing Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS) concentrations in water, this project is a visionary step towards sustainable water management, clean energy, and environmental resilience.

The proposed AquaCav hybrid reactor, a synergy of a unique Acoustic Cavitation (AC) reactor designed, developed and tested for upscaling at OBU under the EPSRC EcoUltra2D project and the novel microscale Hydrodynamic Cavitation (HC) reactor designed and developed at OBU/SU under the Royal Society Issac Newton International Fellowship (led by Dr. Morteza Ghorbani), will serve as the cornerstone of this endeavour. By significantly reducing processing times, optimizing control, and enhancing performance throughput, the proposed environmentally friendly reactor (requires low energy, avoids chemical use) aims to provide an effective and sustainable solution for water refinement eliminating micro-pollutants. This marks another step towards addressing this global grand challenge.

Leveraging the collective expertise of OBU and SU and the existing and successful collaboration history, this project will not only offer a technological breakthrough but also envisions a near future platform where every home/facility becomes a hub for cleaner water and a healthier environment.in bir merkez haline geldiği, yakın gelecekte hayata geçirilmesi düşünülen bir platform öngörmektedir.
