Sabancı University EFSUN Research Center hosted an important event that shed light on the future of energy storage technologies. The student workshop entitled “Alternatives to Lithium-Ion Batteries for Electric Vehicles” was moderated by Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Faculty Member and EFSUN Director Emre Erdem.

The current status of lithium-ion batteries, the limitations of this technology, and the alternatives in the near future were discussed in detail in the workshop. Presentations and discussions on new-generation materials focused on the transformation of battery technologies in the future of the electric vehicle sector.
Participants comprehensively evaluated the advantages of alternative battery materials, the opportunities they offer in terms of sustainability, and the impacts of these technologies on electric vehicles. The workshop revealed the critical role of material selection on battery performance, safety, and environmental impacts.
The diverse perspectives brought by the students from different disciplines provided a broader perspective on the future of energy storage technologies. The innovative approaches of the young researchers to the subject revealed once again how important it is to think from multiple perspectives in the field of energy storage.
