New invention by SU graduate Canan Dağdeviren!

Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Program 2009 alumnus Canan Dağdeviren added a new achievement to her long line of success. Canan developed a tattoo-like wearable device that is designed to facilitate the diagnosis of skin cancer, and provides results in less than 10 seconds.

Our graduate Dr. Canan Dağdeviren, who is the first Turkish national to be appointed "Junior Fellow" to Harvard University, developed a tattoo-like wearable device that is designed to facilitate the diagnosis of skin cancer, and provides results in less than 10 seconds.

One of the "30 Young Scientists Under 30" as chosen by Forbes, Dr. Dağdeviren published her work in the Nature Materials journal.

Canan achieved this breakthrough success at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she currently pursues her scientific endeavors.

Turkish inventor develops device that diagnoses cancer in under 10 seconds

Dr. Dağdeviren explains that the device applies pressure on the skin to assess its mechanical properties.  "This shows us whether that part of skin is susceptible to cancer. The mechanical properties of skin cancer are known. When results are similar to the known properties, biopsy and other procedures are called for."

Dr. Dağdeviren says she applied the device to suspected cancer patients, while a physician performed biopsies: "I sent them my own data. I told them what looked abnormal. Biopsy results came two weeks later and exactly confirmed my findings. This is a quick, painless and simple method. You get results in less than ten seconds."

Use of the device

Dr. Dağdeviren says that the device is wearable like a tattoo, and may be removed and replaced: "It is so thin that it is not felt at all on the body. Electrical connections send the data to computers. This is processed by a software that yields a colored map of the body, showing its mechanical properties. Even very small sites of anomaly are visible on this map."
