Prof. Dr. Turgay Bayraktar, a faculty member at the Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, was elected president of the Turkish Mathematical Society during the General Assembly held on September 25, 2026.
Founded in 1948, the Turkish Mathematical Society is one of Türkiye’s most established organizations in the field of mathematics. Holding the status of an association working for the public good, the Turkish Mathematical Society’s primary objectives include contributing to the institutionalization of mathematics in Türkiye, supporting mathematical research activities, and fostering mathematics education through various means, particularly scholarships.
In addition to its national activities, the Turkish Mathematical Society represents the Turkish mathematics community internationally. The Society acts as the representative for Türkiye within the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the European Mathematical Society (EMS).
Contribution from Sabancı University to the Turkish Mathematical Society Leadership
Sabancı University’s Founding President, Prof. Dr. Tosun Terzioğlu, also served as the president of the Turkish Mathematical Society for many years (1989–2006). Prof. Dr. Turgay Bayraktar’s election to the presidency not only strengthens this long-standing bond but also adds a new dimension of responsibility to the efforts of Sabancı University members regarding the development of mathematical research and education in Türkiye.
