The Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipation (GESDA) Summit, which aims to bring together science and diplomacy to produce forward-looking solutions to global challenges, was held this year in Geneva. Sabancı Foundation Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı, who participated as a speaker at the summit, highlighted the future of philanthropy, the importance of trust and accountability, and the necessity of collaboration for sustainable social transformation. Held annually in Geneva since 2021, GESDA is one of the most important global platforms where science meets diplomacy. With the participation of more than 1,000 scientists, diplomats, decision-makers, innovators, business leaders, and citizens, it opens discussions on scientific developments that could address humanity's most pressing challenges.

Güler Sabancı, Chair of the Sabancı Foundation Board of Trustees, shared her views on the future of philanthropy at the GESDA Summit held in Geneva, Switzerland. Speaking at the session "The Role of Philanthropy and Private Capital in a Sovereignty-Driven World," Sabancı discussed the role of philanthropy in times of multiple crises, the importance of trust and accountability, and shared her views on collaboration for sustainable social transformation.

"Science and philanthropy play a key role in combating rising inequalities."

Highlighting the increasing inequalities brought about by technological advancements, Sabancı emphasized that philanthropy no longer means simply doing good, but transforming systems, and that it plays a key role alongside science. "We are going through a truly challenging time for humanity. In the face of rising inequalities, being able to discuss problems together on a platform like GESDA is crucial, because solving major problems with a single institution or a single method is impossible. We need to renew our perspective and the ways we generate solutions. We must rediscover, discuss, design, and reflect on these issues."

"True trust begins beyond goodwill."

In her speech, Sabancı said, "Trust and legitimacy are the foundations of philanthropy. I call this 'trust, the currency of philanthropy.' Social development begins with building trust, transparency, and having a clear purpose. Education is the foundation of trust and sustainable development. Founded 25 years ago, Sabancı University is one of the most concrete examples of the culture of creating and learning together. Today, Sabancı University is one of the best research institutions in our country."

"Collaborations play a critical role in solving major problems."

"At the Sabancı Foundation, we have been providing grants for the last 20 years," said Güler Sabancı, adding, "During this period, we have generally supported small civil society organizations implementing projects for the first time in the field. To date, we have supported nearly 250 projects. However, as I always say, it's not just about financial support. What matters is mentoring, providing guidance, and working together towards a common goal. The path to success lies primarily in establishing a shared understanding of what needs to be done. If we work together, we can multiply our impact."

The Triangle of Success: Public, Private Sector, and Civil Society

Sabancı emphasized the critical role of the collaborative efforts of the public, private sector, and civil society in solving major problems. "We call this the Triangle of Success. Philanthropy is a key part of this triangle. Developing collaborations for solutions while maintaining our global perspective is vital."
