How can Values be Realigned to the Future?
The Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards, which are held every year, encourage applications from theoretical, empirical, and comparative perspectives and a variety of disciplinary perspectives based on the selected theme in 2025. The award program invites applicants to critically examine the values that shape individuals, societies, and institutions, and to propose ideas on how these can be preserved, realigned, or reconsidered to guide the complexities of the 21st century and inform future generations.
The 2025 award theme emphasizes that values serve as guiding principles that shape individual behavior, social, economic, and political norms, and institutional practices. At the same time, it emphasizes that values are of vital importance in a changing world. Values, which provide stability by creating a moral and ethical framework for making decisions, setting priorities, and addressing complex challenges in times of uncertainty and change, are also the building blocks for democracy, security, economic order, and peace. In an era of rapid change and disruption, technological advancement, and increasing global connectivity, the world is undergoing a profound transformation. Parallel to these developments, there are discussions about whether the values that have traditionally guided individuals, groups, nations, and institutions need a critical re-evaluation. In this context, the following questions are particularly important: In light of today’s realities, which values from the past need to be preserved, which ones need to be re-evaluated, and which principles need to be completely realigned in order to respond to current problems and provide frameworks for understanding the world? The 2025 program will evaluate articles that address these questions and compare different contexts and historical periods.
