Abstract:Waves in layered medium has been one of the most fundamental and heavily studied subjects of classical electromagnetism. Initially, main application areas were RF/integrated circuit design, geophysical prospecting, and remote sensing. With the transformational changes experienced in nano-fabrication and material science in the last decade, the focus has been shifted towards nano-photonics to create new technologies aiming to beat the diffraction limit and Moore’s law. Very recently, we have started to utilize machine learning to take these technologies to the next level.

In this talk, first I will briefly summarize my contributions in layered medium electromagnetics. Then I will discuss my transition to computational and applied photonics and how we design novel photonic devices deploying plasmonic structures and 2D materials. In the third part, I will describe my recent efforts on electromagnetic inversion and photodetector performance improvement with machine learning and optimization. I will conclude with future research directions

Bio: Dr. Simsek received a B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the Bilkent University in 2001 and an M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Duke University in 2003 and 2006, respectively. After working as a postdoctoral research associate at Schlumberger-Doll Research and a faculty member at Bahcesehir University and George Washington University, he joined University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2018, where currently he is the Director of Graduate Data Science Programs.

Dr. Simsek's current and past studies are engaged with theoretical, computational, and experimental research at the broad interface between electromagnetics, photonics, and machine learning. Problems of specific interest include: wave propagation and scattering in complex media, nano-photonic and opto-electronic device design, applications of machine learning in electromagnetic inversion and device design. He has authored or coauthored 31 journal papers, 63 conference papers, and a book chapter in these areas. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and teaches courses on electromagnetics, photonics, and machine learning.
