We commemorated our valuable Professor Durmuş Ali Demir with a science event on the first anniversary of his passing

Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Faculty Member Durmuş Ali Demir, whom we lost on February 24, 2024, was commemorated on the first anniversary of his passing with a science event entitled “A Life Dedicated to Theoretical Physics: In Memory of Durmuş Ali Demir.”

The event, which took place on February 24, 2025 at Sabancı University Minerva Han Karaköy, brought together international scientists who conducted research with Durmuş Ali Demir and young scientists who conduct theoretical studies in our country.

The event, which began with the opening speeches of Sabancı University President Yusuf Leblebici and Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Dean Erkay Savaş, was followed with strong interest by 3rd and 4th year physics students and minor students who wanted to commemorate Durmuş Ali Hoca with science and advance in the field of theoretical physics.

The event featured prominent scientists such as Soner Albayrak (METU), Alhun Aydın (Sabancı), Tuna Demircik (Utrecht), Lisa L. Everett (Wisconsin), Yasaman Farzan (IPM, Tehran), Mariana Frank (Concordia), Shaaban Khalil (Zewail City of Science, Technology and Innovation), Can Kozcaz (Boğaziçi), and Shahin Sheikh-Jabbari (IPM, Tehran) as speakers.

Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Faculty Members Ersin Göğüş and Göktuğ Karpat, Guest Researcher Beyhan Puliçe, Umut Gürsoy (Utrecht), Tuğrul Senger (İzmir Ekonomi), İsmail Turan (METU), and Mithat Ünsal (North Carolina) served on the event's organizing committee.

Durmuş Ali Demir, one of the leading theoretical physicists not only in our country but also in the world, was ranked among the "World's Most Influential Scientists" in 2020. Demir, who received the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award, the TÜBİTAK Incentive Award, the TÜBA GEBIP Award, the Mustafa. N.
