Elginkan Foundation Awards given

"Turkish Culture Research and Technology Awards" established by the Elginkan Foundation to promote and disseminate research on Turkish culture and technology were given. Among the recipients of the 9th Awards in Technology was Sabancı University Associate Professor Bahattin Koç and his work on 3D printing of artificial tissue and organs.

The first 3D printing of aorta tissue in the world

Bahattin Koç and his students Can Küçükgül, Saime Burçe Özler and Forough Hafezi started research to use the regular or stem cells of a patient to produce an identical replica of the tissue or even organ required for transplant. Live cells were used for 3D bio-printing of the artificial tissue, and the success of the team means that the risk of transplant rejection will be eliminated in the future.
