An interdisciplinary first by Sabancı University alumni

“Tiyatro POT”, an interdisciplinary drama ensemble of Sabancı University alumni, will stage ‘4.48 Psychosis’ as its first drama project with interactive stage design at the Taksim Maya Sahnesi on Wednesday, February 8 and Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 8.30 pm.

Founded in 2011 by VACD 2010 graduate Gizem Darendelioğlu, Tiyatro POT focuses on thinking about innovative performance ideas and creating projects that bring together performing arts with new media technologies.  The ensemble consists of artists from various disciplines such as drama, visual communication design, film and television, social studies and mechatronics.
“4.48 Psychosis” is the first interactive stage project of the ensemble.  The cast includes Sabancı University Mechatronic Engineering graduate Burcu Karadeniz as assistant director; Electronic Engineering (undergraduate) / Mechatronic Engineering (master’s) graduate Osman Koç in sound and interaction design, and Social and Political Science graduate Sadun Özdinç in lighting design.

“4.48 Psychosis” is Tiyatro POT’s first project, and emerged as 2010 VACD graduate Gizem Darendelioğlu’s graduation project on interactive art.  Consulting her friends at the Sabancı University Chamber Drama Club, Darendelioğlu helped the idea to evolve from a project to a production, and the ultimate creation of Tiyatro POT.  The professional performance of the play began in late 2011, and the play received wide critical acclaim after only five performances.  The first performance of 2012 took place at the Maya Stage in Taksim on January 29th, and further performances will follow at the Maya Stage.

“4.48 Psychosis” is the last play and epilogue on life by Sarah Kane, the shrew of the British drama scene and one of the leading representatives of the “in-yer-face” movement that emerged in the late 90s.  The play is a monolog by a sufferer of psychosis.  The patient and her language is a metaphor for the depression of humanity, trapped in the concept of “normalization” imposed by modernity.  Tiyatro POT brought a fresh new approach to the script and designed the stage as a series of images revolving in the mind of the character.  These images include prerecorded videos as well as videos streamed and directed in real time, which is a novel use of technology.  Cameras trace the actress onstage, locate her position and add visual depth to the stage with videos, stills or graphics.  This is an innovative approach to depicting split personality, fragmentation and multiple personalities embedded in the text.  In addition to blending technology with art, the play supports the text with strong acting and visually rich narrative.

If the objective of art is to tell the story of the human with respect to the realities of the times, an artistic movement of the 20th century may achieve the right form if it utilizes technology to serve the content – this is the motto of Tiyatro POT, whose projects involve interactive artistic production, digital stage design, and video performance.

In addition to the use of pioneering interactive technology in 4.48 Psychosis, Tiyatro POT will continue with new projects and performances in international festivals.
