SU Sail attended Campus Cup and Sportsboat Trophy

Sabancı University's SU Sail Club, attended Campus Cup 2018 and Sportsboat Trophy.

 

SU Sail Campus Cup 2018 

SU Sail team were in Marmaris for Campus Cup organized by Marmaris International Yacht Club (MIYC) between 31 March - 1 April. The racing team made a total of four races and became the fourth as a final result. Team had the opportunity to exchange ideas with other schools' sailing clubs in this organization. 

SU Sail Sportsboat Trophy

After Campus Cup, SU Sail participated in the Sportsboats Trophy organized by Moda Marine Club in Kalamış on Sunday, April 8, 2018. SU Sail team, competing with Poseidon, made the total of three races and became second among 14 boats in their classification, while in the general order they became 5th among 19 boats.

Sabancı University visited by Istanbul and Kocaeli Organized Industrial Zone Directors

The directors of the Istanbul and Kocaeli Organized Industrial Zones visited Sabancı University on Friday, April 17.  Also attending the meeting were Kocaeli Director of Science, Industry, and Technology İlhan Aydın, Istanbul Division Manager of Science, Industry and Trade İsrafil Yıldız, Kocaeli Chamber of Industry Vice Secretary-General Elif Bilgisu, and Kocaeli University Vice President Professor Nilgün Fığlalı.


Participants discussed the importance of university-industry partnership. The meeting was followed by visits to the Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM), Collaboration Space and Information Center.

2017-2018 SUMMER SEMESTER DORM APPLICATIONS

 

Details of placement and payments for undergraduate and graduate students who wish to use dormitory facilities in the 2017-2018 Summer Semester are given below.

  • The details of students who will be staying at the dormitories for summer semester projects, compulsory internships, Summer Semester School of Languages (7 weeks) or the Summer Semester Courses (7 weeks) will be provided to Accommodations Services by the administrative assistans of faculties and Student Resources.
  • Housing applications for the 2017-2018 Summer Semester will be made online at the student information system (bannerweb.sabanciuniv.edu). Applications will begin on 14/05/2018 at 10 am and end on 01/06/2018 at 12 pm.
  • Placement results of all students applying online will be announced on student information system (bannerweb.sabanciuniv.edu) 11/06/2018.
  • Dormitory fees must be paid between 11/06/2018 and 13/06/2018

The students who make their payment check-in after on 16/06/2018

  • Have to signature check-in form from B1-G042 Dormitory officer offices at the weekends and out of working hours,
  • Have to signature check-in form from related dormitory specialist offices and complete check-in procedures at weekdays and working hours.

 

We would like to remind you that you need to make online dormitory application even if lists have been sent to Housing by your faculties and Student Resources.

“National Geographic on Campus!” begins at Sabancı University

“National Geographic on Campus!” begins at Sabancı University

The opening event for the “National Geographic on Campus!” series will take place at Sabancı University in association with the Sabancı University Istanbul Policy Center and National Geographic. 

The event will be held with IPM 2017/18 fellow Barış Karapınar, who is conducting a study on "Climate change and soil: Balancing synergies of adaptation and mitigation in Turkey through sustainable soil management", and National Geographic photographer Reza Deghati

 

Barış Karapınar, a contributor to the "İklim Meselesi" program on National Geographic TV, will discuss the impact and fragility caused by food, migration and poverty in connection with climate change, the possible steps for a solution, and recent positive developments in the quest for permanent solutions. 

Meanwhile, Reza Deghati will draw upon his 30-year experience with National Geographic to present images from the Middle East. He will share the pictures and stories of people forced to migrate as a result of climate change. 

Deghati worked with the leading publications of the world, including Newsweek, Time and Life. He published an interview titled “Turkey Struggles for Balance” for National Geographic in 1994, and photographed the aftermath of the August 17 and November 12 earthquakes in Turkey in 1999. As a storyteller with photographs and videos, Deghati received the Légion d'honneur in 2005.  

The first in the “National Geographic on Campus!” series will be held at the Cinema Hall on Tuesday, April 17. The event is open to all students and employees. 

The event will be in English and no interpretation will be available.

IPC becomes one of Turkey's most influential and fastest-growing think tanks 

Sabancı University Istanbul Policy Center (IPC) revealed its 2016-17 Activity Report to the public. Discussing the report on the summary of programs, projects, events and publications in the institution's three research areas, IPC Director Fuat Keyman said that IPC had become one of the most influential, prestigious and fast-growing think tanks of Turkey in the recent years. 

 

Sabancı University Istanbul Policy Center (IPC) published its 2016-17 Activity Report. The report summarized programs, projects, events and publications in the institution's three research areas.

 Discussing the 2016-17 Activity Report, IPC Director Fuat Keyman said that IPC had become one of the most influential, prestigious and fast-growing think tanks of Turkey in the recent years. Professor Keyman said that 2016 and 2017 were difficult and important years from many aspects, continuing, "First and foremost, we are proud to have made IPC even stronger in these trying times. As the visibility and influence of IPC improved with endeavors from research to events, publications and conferences, its perception in the society also developed." 

IPC DERIVES STRENGTH FROM ACADEMIC THOROUGHNESS AND TEAMWORK 

Saying that IPC derived strength from academic thoroughness, creativity, being up to date with current events, teamwork, and a happy oıffice environment, Professor Keyman explained that IPC had become one of the fastest-growing and most influential think tanks in Turkey thanks to its activities in the three research areas, and its successful team. Professor Keyman said the following about IPC's three main areas of focus: 

“IPC's first research area, the “IPC Sabancı University - Stiftung Mercator Initiative”, was established in 2011. The initiative exceeded our expectations and became a point of reference in EU/Germany - Turkey relationships and Climate Change. We hope to bring new impetus to the EU/Germany - Turkey partnership in particular. Our second area, Democratization and Institutional Reform, contributes to democratization and good governance in Turkey. The third area of Conflict Resolution and Mediation provides significant input into the national and international visibility of our center." 

IPC'S WORK AND FOCUS AREAS 

  • With 45 fellows and administrative employees, three main areas of research and 15 current and active research programs, IPC held more than 250 panel discussions, conferences, workshops and book launches in Turkey and abroad.
  • IPC published nearly 150 reports, policy notes and articles that were shared with key stakeholders around the world.
  • As part of the Initiative, IPC hosted 37 fellows and 12 senior fellows in the past six years, including leading researchers, journalists and professionals in their respective fields.
  • IPC worked with over 30 national and international institutions and published hundreds of articles and academic papers in various media.
  • Since 2015, IPC has been the official representative of Sabancı University in the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties.
  • The SHURA Energy Transformation Center was established in partnership with Agora Energiwende and the European Climate Foundation in 2018 to provide a sustainable and prestigious platform for discussion around the transformation of the energy system in Turkey spearheaded by renewable resources.
  • IPC founded the Checks and Balances Network, the first of its kind in Turkey, with the assistance and participation of a number of nongovernmental organizations.
  • IPC's work in the democratization and institutional reform field includes governance and urban studies.
  • Under the governance chapter, IPC offers policy recommendations in local governments, decentralization, and regional administration.
  • Urban studies include the impact of globalization on the economic and democratic development of larger provinces in Anatolia.
  • In addition, IPC launched Asian studies in 2016. IPC coordinates with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, nongovernmental organizations on humanitarian aid, and various other actors. Its latest efforts were on the rebuilding of the state and inclusive growth in the aftermath of the July 15 coup attempt. The program focuses on the Middle East and Arabian Spring, the building of peace, migration and refugees, mediation, the Kurdish issue, and the role of conflict resolution in the democratization of Turkey.

Sabancı University Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design graduates were featured in Istanbul Art News.

Didem Erk:

Our graduate Didem Erk is now being represented by Istanbul- and Berlin- based Zilberman Gallery. Didem Erk is a 2009 graduate of the Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design bachelor's program, and 2012 graduate of the master's program. Using performance, video, installation and text as her tools, Didem Erk explores the poetic side of concepts like language, memory and borders when interacting with places.

 

Dila Yumurtacı

A 2017 graduate of the Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design master's program. Dila Yumurtacı is also a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dance. In 2008, she joined dadans, an ensemble that pursues interdisciplinary creations using dance, film, drama and performance.

 

Halil Atasever

A 2014 graduate of the Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design master's program. Performance artist and actor. He continued to perform at Sabancı University during his degree. Having worked as visual communication designer in various Istanbul companies from 2014 to 2017, Atasever currently lives in London.  

 

Batu Bozoğlu

A 2010 graduate of the Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design master's program. Performance artist. One of the 10 artists who performed at Perform Istanbul in March. Batu Bozoğlu’s performances explore participatory policies and the resulting power plays and ownership issues. Batu has performed in a number of artistic events in Turkey and abroad.

Özgür Demirtaş joins Akbank Board of Directors

Sabancı University School of Management faculty member Professor Özgür Demirtaş was appointed to the Akbank Board of Directors. Professor Demirtaş will work in close collaboration with Akbank's top management to shape the future of banking.

In addition to his position as the Head of the Finance Chair at the Sabancı University School of Management, Professor Özgür Demirtaş is also the founding director of the Center of Excellence in Finance (CEF) founded in 2016 with the support of Akbank

2018 BAGEP Awards

The Academy of Science announced the winners of the 2018 Young Scientist Awards Program (BAGEP). Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences members İnci Gümüş and Mert Moral won awards.


Faculty Member İnci Gümüş will receive her award in the field of Economics while Mert Moral will receive his award in Political Science.

The objective of the Academy of Science Young Scientists Awards (BAGEP) is to identify and reward outstanding young academics, support them in their future research, encourage young individuals to undertake scientific studies, and to reward exemplary individuals.

The BAGEP Awards by the Academy of Science are given to academics under the age of 40 and entail a cash prize of TL 15,000 per year for a duration of two years to support research.

İnci Gümüş and Mert Moral will receive their awards at a ceremony to be held on Friday, April 27.
