Admission Requirements for Graduate School of Social Sciences

IMPORTANT WARNING: All REQUIRED documents must be submitted during applications. Applications with incomplete documentation will not be taken into consideration. RECOMMENDED documents are not obligatory, but will be influential in the review process. (Please see the table for required and recommended documents from the link above.)

• The applicant must submit ALES, e-ALES, GRE or GAT result during application. Applications without a valid exam result will not be taken into consideration.
• Candidates are required to submit their English proficiency exam scores (TOEFL IBT, e-YDS, YDS, KPDS, ÜDS, PTE Academic, CAE or CPE) during the application. Applicants who are unable to provide a valid English Proficiency Exam score can only be admitted to graduate study upon obtaining a satisfactory grade in Sabancı University English Language Assessment Exam (ELAE) offered following the application deadline. Those candidates who fail to attend or get a satisfactory grade in ELAE exam are obliged to attend and successfully complete English Language Preparation course(s) in order to enroll in a graduate program. Scholarships do not apply to the English Language Preparation courses.

ELAE exam is not substituted for language exam in PhD applications. For PhD candidates exam results must be submitted during application; applications without these documents will not be taken into consideration.

Graduates of Sabancı University are exempt from submitting an English Proficiency Exam score provided that they apply within two years of their graduation. For PhD applications, SU graduates are required to submit language certificate as well.

A limited number of scholarships based on academic achievement are available in the form of partial or full tuition waivers and/or stipends.

Sakıp Sabancı Remembered with the “Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards” in the 14th Year of His Passing. This year's Jury Prize in the Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards was given to New York University Faculty Member Adam Przeworski.

Sabancı University Founding Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı: 

• We need to prioritize knowledge generation, research, scientific thinking and discussion to enable Turkey to become effective, capable and consistent in finding solutions to regional and global problems. All three areas require that we stand together and act together with the world. 

• Sabancı University Honorary Chairman Sakıp Sabancı believed that social sciences deserved the same level of support as natural sciences. Being the visionary he was, he endowed Turkey's only academic prize in social sciences with an international outreach. 

• The Columbia University Sakıp Sabancı Center for Turkish Studies opens on May 4th. We believe that the Center will be a crucial reference point for Turkish Studies.

In honor of the late Sakıp Sabancı, Honorary Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sabancı University, the “Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards” were presented at a ceremony hosted by the Sakıp Sabancı Family and Sabancı University on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at the Sabancı Center. 

"We need to prioritize knowledge generation, research, scientific thinking and discussion to enable Turkey to become effective, capable and consistent in finding solutions to regional and global problems."

Sabancı University Founding Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı began by saying, "Sabancı University Honorary Chairman Sakıp Sabancı believed that social sciences deserved the same level of support as natural sciences. Being the visionary he was, he endowed Turkey's only academic prize in social sciences with an international outreach." 

Güler Sabancı continued, “Turkey has been a bridge between the West and East on the geopolitical and cultural levels, acting as a regional power and global player for world peace since the Ottoman Empire. We need to prioritize knowledge generation, research, scientific thinking and discussion to enable Turkey to become effective, capable and consistent in finding solutions to regional and global problems." Sabancı stated that all three areas required that Turkey stood together and acted together with the world. Güler Sabancı explained that both Sabancı University and the Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards were based on this fundamental philosophy, saying "This universal perspective is a clear embodiment of the late Sakıp Bey’s vision.”

Reminding the audience that Sakıp Sabancı thought for Turkey but his thoughts were not limited to Turkey's borders, Güler Sabancı said, “The international aspect of everything he did was very dear to him. The same line of thinking culminated in Sabancı University. We wanted to build an academic organization that commanded international respect and recognition. We set out on this path to become a 'global university' and today we are an organization that is consistently on international rankings." 

Güler Sabancı stated that Sabancı University would celebrate its 20th year in 2019, continuing, "We would also like to announce a bold initiative that our young university found the courage to undertake thanks to its international recognition. The Columbia University Sakıp Sabancı Center for Turkish Studies, the perfect place to make the Sakıp Sabancı name eternal, will open in New York on May 4th." Güler Sabancı said that Sabancı University's efforts in social sciences would leap to the next level with this forthcoming international cooperation, adding that the support of Ayşe Kadıoğlu and the entire Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences would make the Center a point of reference for Turkish Studies across the world. 

In conclusion, Güler Sabancı said that the theme for the 2019 Awards would be “The Future of Multipartisanism in Global Disorder: Rethinking Security, Economy and Democracy.”

The winner of the Jury Prize was Adam Przeworski, a veteran of political science who has been working on democracies for over 50 years, and has inspired many younger political scientists in Turkey and the world. Adam Przeworski, the Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Politics at New York University, won the Jury Prize with his outstanding work on democratic regimes and markets. Adam Przeworski worked in the most prestigious universities of different continents, trained a vast number of political scientists, and played a key role in shaping the field of comparative politics.  He was an advisor to the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, the UN Development Program, and the Organization of American States. 

Speaking in the award ceremony, Adam Przeworski said that we shared transnational problems which require international efforts to solve. He noted that the prize was especially relevant to young scientists for continuing their global efforts. 

Adam Przeworski continued: "All my life, I tried to find answers to two questions. First: How can people divided by values, norms and interests live together? And second: How can democracy coexist with economic and social inequality? Considering that losing parties have a chance to win in the future, political actors and groups will prefer to stay within the system. The balance between economy and democracy is critical. Research suggests that countries which have attained certain levels of economic development were then able to improve their democracies. Democracy is under threat in all countries. For the first time in two hundred years, many parents believe that their children will be worse off than they are.  In the longer term, economic consequences will influence the decision of political actors and groups to remain within the boundaries of democracy." 

The three equally-weighted Essay Awards were given to:  

• Selim Erdem Aytaç for the essay The Appeal of Populism and the Role of Elite Discourse: Evidence from Turkey

• İpek Çınar for the essay Democracy Dismantled: Strategic Choices of Would-be Autocrats
• Berk Esen” for the essay Elective Affinities between Democratic Backsliding and Populism: the Cases of Turkey and Hungary in Comparative Perspective. 

Introductory remarks to the ceremony were delivered by Sabancı University Founding Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı. Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences member Özge Kemahlıoğlu, the president of this year's jury panel, explained the reasoning behind the jury's selection. Kemahlıoğlu said that Adam Przeworski, the winner of the Jury Prize, made great contributions to defining democracy as a political regime, focusing on elections and ambiguity. Accordingly, democracy is a political system where the results of any election is a mere probability for citizens who are unaware of each other's political preferences. 

Özge Kemahlıoğlu said that Przeworski's work played a critical part in developing the literature in this field, and noted that countries which have attained certain levels of economic development were then able to improve their democracies, and prevented any subsequent collapse of their democracies. 

Following the speeches, Adam Przeworski received his prize from Sabancı University Founding Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı and Sabancı University President Professor Zehra Sayers.  Essay Award winners received their prizes from Sabancı University Board of Trustees Member Sevil Sabancı, Melisa Tapan, and Sabancı University President Professor Zehra Sayers. 

More than 370 submissions from 31 countries over 13 years

Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards were established 13 years ago to honor the will of the late Sakıp Sabancı, and are given by Sabancı University in fields including Turkish and Islamic art, and the history, economy and sociology of Turkey. The award program is led by the Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Istanbul Policy Center. Submissions are reviewed by an international panel of independent jury members. In the last 13 years, Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards have been given in subjects ranging from Turkey's economy to foreign policy, history, and social dynamics. More than 370 submissions were received from 31 countries for the 13 Awards given so far.

Starting in 2015, the Board of Trustees and Sakıp Sabancı Family resolved to give the Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards as part of the Remembrance Ceremony.  Award themes in previous years were other pressing issues such as “Checks and Balances in Democracy: the Turkish Case from a Comparative Perspective,” “Gender Equality in Turkey,” "Coexisting in Turkey: Diversity, Dialog and Cooperation", and "New Centers in Turkey: Economy, Education, Arts and Peace in Cities”. The 2017 Awards were given in “Europeans with Legacies from Turkey in Everyday Life”, and this year's theme was “Democratic Governance and Threats against Coexistence in Turkey and the World.” 

In the tradition of the previous awards, the 2019 Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards will seek to support scholars, particularly young social scientists, discussing a current issue on an academic level. The theme for the 2019 Awards will be “The Future of Multipartisanism in Global Disorder: Rethinking Security, Economy and Democracy.” 

Jury Panel

The president of this year's Jury Panel was Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences member Özge Kemahlıoğlu. The international jury panel consisted of Sabancı University Istanbul Policy Center Director Fuat Keyman, Sabancı University Faculty Member Ayşe Kadıoğlu, John D. Huber from Columbia University, Milan Svolik from Yale University, Dr. Dimitar Bechev from The University of North Carolina, and Ellen Lust from Gothenburg University.

 About Adam Przeworski

Adam Przeworski is Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Politics at New York University. 

After graduating from the Philosophy and Sociology Department at University of Warsaw, he received PhD degrees in Political Science from Northwestern University and Sociology from Polish Academy of Sciences. He previously taught at University of Chicago and Washington University. Among others Professor Przeworski is the recipient of the Johan Skytte Prize and Woodrow Wilson Book Prize.   

Professor Przeworski contributed to the studies on democracy by analyzing the empirical relationship between economic factors and political regimes, economic outcomes under democratic rule, the theoretical definition of political regimes, and the strategic choices of political actors who are involved in the transition process. 

His books include Capitalism And Social Democracy, Democracy And The Market: Political And Economic Reforms In Eastern Europe And Latin America, Democracy And Development: Political Regimes And Material Well-Being In The World, 1950-1990, Capital Democracy and the Limits of Self-Government, Why Bother with Elections? 

Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) Researchers Dr. Anjum Qureshi (SUNUM) and Dr. Javed H. Niazi’s “Probing size-dependent toxicity of nanomaterials on living microbial cells using lab-on-a-chip” titled project work has been highlighted in TUBITAK March 2018 bulletin. 

Project highlights and findings: 

The nanoparticles are rapidly becoming part of our daily life mainly because of their antibacterial and odor-fighting properties in many commercial products, such as cosmetics, toothpastes, sanitary-ware coatings, paints, wound-dressings, detergents, food packaging and even in medicine and drug delivery systems. Despite obvious benefits of these nanomaterials, there is a serious concern on their long-term impact on human health and environment due to their harmful or toxic effects. 

The goal of this project was to probe size-dependent toxicity of nanomaterials on living microbial cells using lab-on-a-chip approach. The whole-cell biosensor (WCB) chip can respond to different nano-sizes and concentrations of nanomaterials through direct change in cellular behavior as capacitive/electrical signal. The schematic diagram below illustrates the interaction of nanoparticles with the bacterial cell under the AC electric field on developed lab-on-chip platform (Fig.1).

Our study demonstrated that toxicity of nanomaterials strictly depended on nano-size of materials, smaller the size of a nanoparticle, greater will be the toxicity on living cells. The extent of toxicity of nanomaterial also depends on type of cells, such as E. coli which is more sensitive to nanoparticles than the yeast cells. 

Investigating the impacts of interactions between NPs and cell-surfaces through electrical and physical properties are important for interpreting toxicity data, and predicting the toxicity risks associated with engineered NPs. The most expensive methods employed todate for toxicity screening rely on fluorescence/colorimetric assays that are conventional techniques, also employed for validation in this project, only provided predictive assessments. The use of living microorganisms with normal cellular activity that are interfaced with electronic chips provided direct, real-time and specific biological information on the nature of NMs’ impact on living cells. Such type of information using the developed WCB chip to our knowledge, no other technique could provide. Thus, the developed WCB chip platform is a versatile tool for high throughput screening of not only NMs but could also for testing a wide range of chemicals, drugs or environmental contaminants. The potential advantages of the developed nanotoxicity assay and sensing platform include its ease of use, sensitivity, inherent selectivity which comes from the specificity of embedded microorganisms, versatility and its cost effectiveness. 

The findings and results of this study has been published in many SCI journals and presented in various international conferences.  All these credentials hold great promise in future of this technology in contributing to significant advances over conventional assays for determining the toxicity of NMs.

Politics Club hosted U.S. Consul General Mrs. Jennifer Davis on Thursday 22nd, February.

Consul General talked about Turkish-American relationships, visa problem, Syria, education in USA and many other issues within approximately 1 hour of program. She mentioned many significant points related to each. She stated that Turkish-American relationships are going through hard times and regarding the war in Syria, Turkey has the every right to protect its borders.  America has its own security concerns in the region due to the presence of Daesh and other terrorist organizations, she added.

In addition to all these, she said that visa problem has been resolved and is back to normal and collaboration on education still continues which is beneficial for both countries. She expects to see "good days" for both countries with the conflicts resolved and collaboration at its finest.

The "Leaping Companies" report issued by Sabancı University - TÜSİAD Competition Forum as part of the TÜSİAD SMB Working Group activities was presented at the TÜSİAD Head Office on Tuesday, April 3.

Introductory remarks were delivered by TÜSİAD Board of Directors Chair Erol Bilecik and Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Dr. Faruk Özlü. TÜSİAD Board of Directors Chair Erol Bilecik said: “Although the small and medium businesses in Turkey are above OECD averages in terms of share in employment and total number of enterprises, they are far below the average in terms of creating added value. This proves that we still have significant improvement opportunities. We need companies that will be the driving force behind economic and social development, and improve workforce efficiency to the next level. Turkish industry should train with SMBs to make a leap itself. Because ‘Meeting an opportunity when prepared is the springboard called luck’."

Bilecik also pointed out the importance of thinking on what else may be done, including incentive policies, to improve the quality of exports and the value created.

Following introductory remarks by TÜSİAD Chair Erol Bilecik, TÜSİAD-Sabancı University Competition Forum Director Associate Professor İzak Atiyas and Bahçeşehir University Center for Economic and Social Studies (BETAM) Senior Researcher Associate Professor Ozan Bakış presented the Leaping Companies Report in a session facilitated by TÜSİAD Chief Economist Dr. Zümrüt İmamoğlu.

The Leaping Companies report focuses on the growth, efficiency and export indicators of companies that have advanced to the next level through rapid growth. According to report criteria, companies that have doubled their turnover or number of employees in the last five years, or attained the status of "large company" at the end of five years are considered Leaping Companies.

Leaping companies employ more

The report shows that most of the "leaping companies" are in the manufacturing sector, followed by wholesale and retail trade.  The majority of leaping companies are located in Istanbul and Ankara, and the "leap" improves total factor efficiency in companies. Companies that have doubled their turnover or number of employees in the last five years are also shown to employ more people. An important finding is that the ratio of information-based capital investments in the total investments of leaping companies is greater compared to companies that do not achieve the leap. 

Turnover leaps in companies that are the most technology-intensive

The report reveals that companies which have achieved leaps in turnover are the most technology-intensive companies. The study shows that efficiency, export-orientation and quality of exports all increase when making the leap, which also improves the survivability of companies. Another noteworthy issue is that older companies have better chances at making a leap due to easier access to funding. 

The presentation of the report was followed by a "Leaping Companies Review Session" moderated by KOSGEB Chair Professor Cevahir Uzkurt. Analyzing the success of leaping companies were Bilgi University Professor of Economics Asaf Savaş Akat, Koç University Professor of Economics and Business Kamil Yılmaz, TÜRKONFED Economy Advisor Pelin Yenigün Dilek, and UNDP Representative Nejat Doğan. The event concluded with remarks by TÜSİAD SMB Working Group Chair Burak Özaydemir.

Sabancı University Technology-Based Startup Acceleration Center SUCOOL implements international programs fır early-stage entrepreneurs and growing startups in energy and clean technologies.

The chance to be part of a global business network

SUCool started a partnership with the Netherlands-based Innoenergy to provide assistance ot early-stage entrepreneurs and startups ready for global growth in the Energy and Clean Technologies sectors in 2018. In association with Innoenergy, SUCool will organize global programs in 2018, beginning with the PRIMER Acceleration Program for entrepreneurs with business ideas on early-stage energy, clean environment technologies, intelligent transportation, sustainability, and mobility. 

As part of the PRIMER program, entrepreneurs will have access to theoretical and applied trainings delivered by energy professionals, mentorship and advisory services offered by executives of energy companies, and opportunities to access initial customers, attract foreign investment, and join a global business network.

Chance to represent Turkey in the Global Finals of the PowerUp Competition

Another program to be implemented by SUCool will be the international startup contest called “PowerUp – Startup Competition” that has been successfully implemented in Europe for the past three years. Seven early-stage energy startups to be chosen among applicants from all over Turkey will attend a two-day camp on May 5 and 6, 2018, followed by the National Finals on May 10.  The winner of the National Finals will compete in the Global Finals to be held in Czechia in June. The best startups in the Global Finals will win a cash prize of 35,000 Euros and a potential investment of 150,000 Euros. PowerUp Turkey applications will remain open until April 15, 2018.

Sabancı University won the "University of the Year" award at the fourth Golden Cube Awards Ceremony held by Teknopark Istanbul.

Acting President Zehra Sayers, SU-IMC Director Mehmet Yıldız and Sabancı Holding Industry Group President Cenk Alper received the award from Undersecretary of Defense Industry Professor İsmail Demir at the awards ceremony.

Ten universities had been nominated for the award and the winner was chosen based on:

• Contributions to university-industry cooperation;

• Research and development activities;

• Contribution to the ecosystem via master's and PhD programs;

• Contribution to the Tech-based Internship program;

• Academic work conducted within the ecosystem.

The first lecture of Design Thinking Seminar series was given by Professor Enzo Siviero, President of the eCAMPUS University - Novedrate (CO) Italy. 

“Collaboration Space”, the latest makerspace for imagining, designing and developing together, was opened in the Sabancı University Information Center.

With “Technology and Art; Design and Entrepreneurship” as its motto, Collaboration Space will be home to various initiatives on virtual reality, ardunio/raspberry pie, photography, 3D modeling, 3D printers and printing, programming, robotics, and other subjects. Collaboration Space is open to Sabancı University students and community, and will host events and seminars by academics and subject matter experts on maker culture. 

Sabancı University Acting President Zehra Sayers opened the first seminar of the "Design Thinking" series which was held to mark the launch of the Collaboration Space in Sabancı University Information Center.

Zehra Sayers thanked all Sabancı University members who helped bring Collaboration Space to life, and noted that the Design Thinking seminar series was an excellent choice for bringing human-centric solutions to complex challenges encountered in everyday life.

Harmony in Bridge Design

In his lecture titled "Harmony in Bridge Design", eCAMPUS University - Novedrate (CO) Italy President Professor Enzo Siviero showed through examples the importance of design not only as an engineering activity but also on architecture and “cultural landscape”.

Sabancı University Program for Undergraduate Research (PURE), is now accepting students for the 2017-2018 Summer Term. Projects will run between  June 25 and August 10, 2018and will accept undergraduates from both Sabancı University and other national and international universities. Application deadline for PURE 2017-2018 Summer Term is April 2, 2018.

Sabancı University Program for Undergraduate Research aims to start equipping undergraduates with state of the art scientific research skills and to start preparing them for successful graduate research, R&D and professional careers at an early stage. 

To apply for a PURE 2017-2018 Summer Term Project, you need to register at PURE Website and select research projects offered by Sabancı University faculty members and researchers. You need to complete the application form latest by April 2, 2018. Applicants will be assigned to projects on the basis of project supervisors' approval and applicants' project preferences. 

To register and login to PURE Website, you need to click on "My Account" at the upper right corner of the main page and follow the instructions.

Industrial Engineering 
The program focuses on production and service systems, integrated manufacturing, supply chain management, logistics, joint inventory-pricing decisions, product development process, modeling and analysis of manufacturing processes and equipment, manufacturing and technology strategies, fuzzy systems, combinatorial optimization and operations research approaches to telecommunication and energy systems. Emphasis is given to close collaboration with the industry.

The Manufacturing Engineering program focuses on advanced manufacturing technologies. Materials Science and Engineering
The program focuses on the interrelationships between structure, properties, and processing of materials for advanced technological applications.  Areas of ongoing research include semiconductors, synthetic and biological polymers, ceramics and composites at the nanometer scale, with particular emphasis on applications in nano-technology.

Mathematics 
The program emphasizes the interaction between pure mathematics and its applications, including those leading to interdisciplinary work. The main areas of concentration are number theory and algebra with applications in coding theory and cryptography, analysis and applications.

Physics
In condensed matter physics the main research areas are experimental and theoretical semiconductor physics, mesoscopic and nanoscopic physics, and superconductivity. In high energy astrophysics, X-, gamma ray and optical obervations of compact objects (neutron stars and black holes) and their environments are the main areas of interest. Other research fields are quantum information and high energy physics.

Applicants must have completed their previous degree programs by September 03rd, 2018.

Financial Support:
Financial support is available in the form of a monthly stipend and/or tuition waiver. Decisions on scholarship will be made by the Admissions Committee .

Deadline:
Applications must be submitted by May 11th, 2018. After initial screening, interviews will be scheduled for potential candidates during May 21st – June 8th ,  2018. Applicants will be informed by e-mail. It is highly recommended to check e-mails for candidates.
